La Fuerza de Policía de Hong Kong (HKPF) ha desmantelado una operación masiva de fraude transfronterizo que utilizaba tecnología ultrafalsa para estafar a hombres con inversiones falsas en criptomonedas.
La estafa se dirigía a hombres a través de falsos romances en línea y, según se informa, las víctimas fueron estafadas con aproximadamente 46 millones de dólares.
27 arrestados en redada en centro de fraude
Informes de los medios locales reveló que la policía identificó a un grupo que operaba desde un centro de fraude ubicado en una unidad industrial de Hung Hom entre agosto y septiembre de 2024. El 9 de octubre, las autoridades allanaron las instalaciones de 4000 pies cuadrados y arrestaron a 27 personas, incluidos 21 hombres y 6 mujeres de edad entre 21 y 34 años.
Los agentes del orden también confiscaron computadoras, teléfonos móviles, relojes de lujo y aproximadamente 25.750 dólares en ganancias del presunto delito en la sede de la operación. Los sospechosos fueron detenidos bajo cargos de conspiración para defraudar y posesión de armas ofensivas.
La operación fraudulenta se centró en el uso de “estafas románticas”, en las que los perpetradores se hacían pasar por mujeres atractivas para atraer a las víctimas a entablar relaciones a través de plataformas en línea. Utilizando tecnología avanzada de falsificación profunda impulsada por inteligencia artificial para crear interacciones realistas, los estafadores se hicieron pasar por mujeres deseables y realizaron videollamadas con sus objetivos.
Una vez que se estableció la confianza, se animó a las víctimas a invertir en criptomonedas virtuales a través de lo que parecía ser una plataforma de inversión legítima.
En realidad, la plataforma era falsa, creada por la organización criminal con la ayuda de graduados universitarios locales reclutados como expertos en tecnología y medios digitales. Estos graduados, junto con otros estafadores extranjeros y especialistas en TI, ayudaron a crear la infraestructura sofisticada que permitió el engaño.

La policía describió el centro de fraude como meticulosamente organizado e inusualmente grande, y el grupo llegó incluso a producir manuales de capacitación en chino e inglés. Estos manuales instruían a los tramposos sobre cómo construir romances falsos y manipular a sus objetivos para extraer dinero.
Fang Chi-kin, jefe de la unidad contra el crimen regional de Nuevos Territorios Sur, explicó que después del contacto inicial con las víctimas en las redes sociales, los impostores utilizaron inteligencia artificial para enviar fotografías generadas artificialmente que representaban a individuos atractivos. Sus personajes falsos fueron cuidadosamente elaborados en términos de apariencia, personalidad, ocupación y educación.
El superintendente Iu Wing-kan añadió que cuando las víctimas solicitaban videollamadas, se utilizaba tecnología ultrafalsa para alterar sus apariencias y voces, lo que hacía que las víctimas confiaran completamente en ellas. Según la policía, la mayoría de los arrestados son hombres, muchos de ellos procedentes de China continental, Taiwán, India y Singapur.
