Rusia condenó a Marat Tambiyev, un ex investigador de rango medio, a 16 años de cárcel después de que lo sorprendieran aceptando un soborno de 1.032 bitcoins, que actualmente vale alrededor de 65 millones de dólares, de los piratas informáticos que estaba investigando.
El soborno provino de miembros del grupo de piratería Infraud Organization, que Tambiyev tenía la tarea de investigar mientras trabajaba para el Comité de Investigación de Rusia (ICR).
El escándalo de los sobornos en Rusia
Tambiev ha estado en el ICR desde 2011, asumiendo responsabilidades clave en varios departamentos de investigación de todo el país. Antes de su caída, ascendió de rango hasta convertirse en jefe de la división de investigación en el distrito Tverskoy de Moscú. El oficial caído en desgracia supuestamente recibió un importante soborno el 7 de abril de 2022 del grupo de piratas informáticos.
Según un pleito Presentado ante el Tribunal de Distrito Nikulinsky de Moscú, Tambiev aceptó el soborno de BTC con la condición de que los activos ilegales del grupo no fueran confiscados, lo que permitió a dos de sus miembros – Kirill Samokutyaevsky y Konstantin Bergmanov – evitar la prisión.
Cuando el soborno se descubrió por primera vez a principios de 2023, los 1.032 bitcoins valían 1.600 millones de rublos, superando el récord anterior de soborno en Rusia de 1.400 millones de rublos, que se habían pagado a plazos.
Una búsqueda en el apartamento de Tambiev en Moscú condujo al descubrimiento de una MacBook Pro de Apple, a la que los investigadores finalmente accedieron varios meses después. En el interior, encontraron una carpeta con la etiqueta “Pensión”, que contenía las claves de dos billeteras en línea con un total de 1.032 bitcoins. El alijo fue confiscado y transferido a una billetera de hardware Ledger Nano X.
Tambiyev mantenido su inocencia, alegando que fue engañado y que sus acciones habían ayudado al estado a recuperar algunos de los fondos asociados con actividades criminales. En relación con el mismo caso, Kristina Lyakhovenko, una subordinada de Tambiyev, fue condenada a nueve años de prisión. Los representantes legales de ambos acusados anunciaron planes de presentar apelaciones.
Además, en 2021, dos miembros de Infraud, Sergey Medvedev de Rusia y Marko Leopard de Macedonia del Norte, fueron sentenciado a cinco a diez años de prisión federal de EE. UU. por tráfico de datos personales robados, datos de tarjetas de crédito, malware y otros bienes ilegales.
Arrestos masivos en Rusia
A pesar de acercarse a la industria de la criptografía después de imponer una prohibición general en 2022, Rusia ha mantenido una postura cautelosa y ha participado en varias investigaciones relacionadas con el uso ilícito. Recientemente, cerca de 100 presuntos ciberdelincuentes vinculados al sistema de pago anónimo UAPS y al intercambio de criptomonedas Cryptex fueron detenido por las autoridades.
Estos individuos estaban involucrados en actividades ilegales, incluido el lavado de dinero y la venta de tarjetas bancarias. El Departamento del Tesoro de EE. UU. informó que Cryptex ha procesado más de 51 millones de dólares procedentes de ataques de ransomware y más de 720 millones de dólares en transacciones asociadas con servicios utilizados frecuentemente por los ciberdelincuentes rusos, incluidos los servicios de mezcla y el intercambio sancionado Garantex.
