El presidente de la Reserva Federal de Minneapolis, Neel Kashkari, se encontró en el lado equivocado de una reacción violenta después de afirmar que la mayoría de las transacciones con criptomonedas involucran drogas o actividades ilegales.
El comentario del funcionario, un conocido criptoescéptico, no quedó sin respuesta, y varios miembros de la comunidad lo criticaron.

Kashkari estaba en el ayuntamiento. reunión en Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, cuando un miembro de la audiencia preguntó si la Reserva Federal tenía la capacidad de recopilar datos sobre transacciones criptográficas, ya que la mayoría de ellas ocurrían “fuera de los canales formales”.
Si bien reconoció que la agencia era pionera en nuevas fuentes de datos para mantenerse al tanto de los acontecimientos en el sector, Kashkari dijo que a pesar del reciente crecimiento de las criptomonedas, las transacciones legítimas de bienes y servicios que utilizan dichos activos siguen siendo raras.
“No pagan por bienes y servicios utilizando criptomonedas. Casi nunca sucede, a menos que la gente esté comprando drogas u otras actividades ilegales”, dijo Kashkari.
Curiosamente, sus comentarios se producen sólo unos días después de que el Banco de la Reserva Federal de Minneapolis polémicamente sugerido el gobierno debería gravar o prohibir los criptoactivos, incluido Bitcoin (BTC), para ayudar a mantener un déficit en su presupuesto.
Los expertos refutan las afirmaciones
Después de que una cuenta de criptonoticias en X informara sobre los comentarios, desató un frenesí de condenas. Hailey Lennon, analista de criptoley y ex asesora regulatoria de Coinbase, cuestionó los comentarios de la Reserva Federal: destacando que los proyectos criptográficos legítimos tengan medidas antilavado de dinero de última generación.
También señaló que el efectivo, no las criptomonedas, sigue siendo el método preferido para financiar actividades ilícitas, y agregó: “Hemos estado luchando contra esta narrativa falsa durante una década”.
El inversor Nic Carter se hizo eco de esta opinión. En una serie de publicaciones en X, criticó las opiniones de Kashkari como mal informadas, haciendo referencia a un pasado informe por Chainalysis que encontró que solo el 0,34% de todas las transacciones criptográficas en 2023 estaban vinculadas a actividades ilegales.
Carter criticó al funcionario de la Reserva Federal por ignorar tales hechos y dijo: “Creo que estar tan equivocado debería ser ilegal”. También compartió un enlace a la adquisición de Bridge, una plataforma de pagos de monedas estables, por parte de Stripe por 1.100 millones de dólares, como prueba más de la creciente legitimidad de los activos digitales.
Varios otros comentaristas tampoco se contuvieron, y algunos acusaron a Kashkari de difundir información errónea. Otros incluso cuestionado su capacidad para ocupar un cargo de tan alto perfil.
“Como mínimo, ser tan ignorante debería descalificarlo para un trabajo financiero de alto perfil”, dijo Dave Weisberger.
El jefe de la Fed de Minneapolis también abordó el tema de las monedas digitales de los bancos centrales, sugiriendo que no había nada que una CBDC pudiera hacer que no lo estén haciendo ya los sistemas de pago como Venmo o PayPal.
También afirmó que no había evidencia de que un dólar digital ayudaría a resolver los problemas que enfrentan las personas no bancarizadas y desatendidas en los Estados Unidos.
