La Oficina Federal de Investigaciones (FBI) hoy anunciado el arresto de Eric Council Jr., un hombre de Alabama vinculado a una adquisición no autorizada en enero de 2024 de la cuenta X (anteriormente conocida como Twitter) de la SEC de EE. UU. El hackeo dio lugar a un anuncio falso sobre los ETF de Bitcoin al contado, lo que provocó una importante perturbación en el mercado.
El FBI dijo que el Consejo utilizó una táctica de intercambio de SIM para obtener el control de la cuenta X de la SEC y publicó un mensaje fraudulento afirmando que la SEC había aprobado los ETF de Bitcoin. El anuncio falso provocó que el precio de Bitcoin aumentara en $1,000, solo para caer en más de $2,000 después de que la SEC corrigiera la información errónea.

¿Cómo ha ocurrido?
Según el FBI, para ejecutar el plan de intercambio de SIM, Council y sus cómplices obtuvieron información de identificación personal (PII) y una plantilla de tarjeta de identificación perteneciente a una víctima. Usando esta información, el Consejo creó una identificación falsa y la presentó en una tienda de un proveedor de telefonía celular en Huntsville, Alabama. Esto le permitió obtener un nuevo Tarjeta SIM vinculada al número de teléfono de la víctima.
Con la tarjeta SIM en mano, compró un nuevo iPhone y lo usó para acceder a la cuenta telefónica de la víctima. Luego obtuvo el acceso códigos necesarios para inicie sesión en la cuenta “@SECGov”. una vez el tenía control de En la cuenta, Council compartió los códigos de acceso con sus cómplices, quienes luego publicaron el mensaje fraudulento.
Por su papel en el hackeo, el Consejo recibió un pago en Bitcoin. Después del ataque, condujo hasta Birmingham, Alabama, para deshacerse del iPhone que había utilizado para acceder a la cuenta de la SEC.
Luego, el Consejo realizó búsquedas en Internet de términos como “hackeo de SECGOV”, “intercambio de sim de Telegram”, “¿cómo puedo saber con certeza si estoy siendo investigado por el FBI” y “¿Cuáles son las señales de que estás siendo investigado por la ley?” la policía o el FBI incluso si usted no ha sido contactado por a ellos.”
Council enfrenta cargos de conspiración para cometer robo de identidad agravado y fraude de dispositivos de acceso, y su comparecencia inicial ante el tribunal está programada para hoy en el Distrito Norte de Alabama.
