La aparición de varias soluciones de escalado de blockchain ha provocado debates sobre las diferencias y roles de la Capa 1, Capa 2, Capa 3, paracaídas y cadenas laterales en el ecosistema criptográfico en evolución. Comprender estos conceptos es crucial para los desarrolladores, inversores y usuarios que navegan por el complejo panorama de las tecnologías blockchain, pero no siempre está muy claro cuál es cuál y por qué necesitamos tantos tipos diferentes.
Las cadenas de bloques de capa 1, como Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB Chain y Solana, forman la arquitectura fundamental de una red blockchain. Estos protocolos de capa base manejan los aspectos de ejecución, disponibilidad de datos y consenso de la red, validando y finalizando transacciones sin depender de otra red. Cada cadena de bloques de Capa 1 tiene su propio token nativo que se utiliza para pagar las tarifas de transacción. Sin embargo, escalar las redes de Capa 1 es un desafío importante, que a menudo requiere cambios en el protocolo central, como aumentar el tamaño del bloque, adoptar nuevos mecanismos de consenso o implementar técnicas de fragmentación.
Para abordar las limitaciones de escalabilidad de las cadenas de bloques de Capa 1, han surgido soluciones de Capa 2 como un marco secundario construido sobre las redes existentes. Los protocolos de Capa 2 trasladan una parte de los requisitos transaccionales de la cadena principal a una arquitectura de sistema adyacente, procesando transacciones fuera de la cadena y registrando solo el estado final en la cadena de bloques de Capa 1. Ejemplos de soluciones de escalamiento de Capa 2 incluyen Bitcoin Lightning Network, cadenas Ethereum Plasma, Optimistic Rollups, ZK-Rollups, cadenas laterales y canales estatales. Estos protocolos (en su mayoría) heredan la seguridad de la cadena de bloques de Capa 1 subyacente al tiempo que mejoran la escalabilidad, la velocidad y los costos.
La búsqueda para encontrar la solución de escalamiento óptima para las Capas 1 está lejos de ser estática. Por ejemplo, la Fundación Ethereum pasó completamente de las soluciones Plasma a la escalabilidad, afirmando:
“Si bien Plasma alguna vez se consideró una solución de escalamiento útil para Ethereum, desde entonces se abandonó en favor de los protocolos de escalamiento de capa 2 (L2). Las soluciones de escalado L2 solucionan varios de los problemas de Plasma”.
Una solución L2 posterior para Ethereum fue la fragmentación, que ahora ha sido reemplazada en la hoja de ruta de Ethereum por “rollups y Danksharding”. La evolución ha continuado después de la actualización de Dencun hacia el escalamiento a través de una Capa 2 sobre una Capa 2, conocida más comúnmente como cadena de Capa 3.
Las cadenas de bloques de Capa 3 son cadenas de aplicaciones específicas que se asientan en redes de Capa 2, lo que permite una mayor escalabilidad, personalización e interoperabilidad. Por ejemplo, Arbitrum Orbit permite a los desarrolladores crear cadenas de Capa 3, conocidas como “cadenas Orbit”, que se asientan en las cadenas de Capa 2 de Arbitrum, Arbitrum One y Arbitrum Nova. Estas cadenas Orbit se pueden configurar con tokens de gas personalizados, rendimiento, privacidad y gobernanza, y proyectos como XAI, Cometh y Deri Protocol ya se basan en Arbitrum Orbit.
De manera similar, OP Stack de Optimism impulsa una “Supercadena” de cadenas de bloques de Capa 3 que comparten capas de seguridad y comunicación, siendo la Base de Coinbase una cadena de Capa 3 prominente en OP Stack. OP Stack tiene como objetivo hacer que las cadenas de Capa 3 sean interoperables. Otras soluciones de Capa 3 incluyen Hyperchains de zkSync y Supernets de Polygon. Los beneficios clave de las Capas 3 incluyen hiperescalabilidad a través de pruebas y compresión recursivas, personalización de tokens de gas, rendimiento, privacidad y gobernanza, interoperabilidad entre las cadenas de Capa 3 y con las Capas 1/2, y bajos costos y alto rendimiento.
Otra solución externa al ecosistema EVM son las Parachains. Las paracaídas son un componente clave de las redes Polkadot y Kusama y también son cadenas de bloques independientes y específicas de aplicaciones que se ejecutan en paralelo dentro de estos ecosistemas. Las paracaídas se conectan a la cadena de retransmisión principal, alquilando su seguridad y manteniendo su propia gobernanza, tokens y funcionalidades. Estas cadenas pueden procesar transacciones e intercambiar datos entre sí sin problemas utilizando protocolos de comunicación entre cadenas como XCMP. Los nodos intercaladores mantienen todo el estado de una paracadena y proporcionan pruebas a los validadores de la cadena de retransmisión.
Las cadenas laterales, otro tipo de solución de escalamiento, son cadenas de bloques separadas que corren paralelas a la cadena principal, con tokens y otros activos digitales que se mueven entre ellas a través de una conexión bidireccional. Las cadenas laterales tienen su propio mecanismo de consenso y parámetros de bloque, lo que las hace más flexibles y escalables que la cadena principal. Se consideran un tipo de solución de Capa 2, ya que descargan parte de la carga transaccional de la cadena principal. Ejemplos de cadenas laterales incluyen Liquid para Bitcoin y Polygon PoS para Ethereum. La diferencia fundamental es que cadenas como Polygon PoS tienen su propio conjunto de validadores y seguridad en lugar de depender de la Capa 1 para proteger la red.
Comprender las funciones y las diferencias entre la Capa 1, la Capa 2, la Capa 3, las paracaídas y las cadenas laterales puede resultar complejo. Cada una de estas tecnologías desempeña un papel crucial a la hora de abordar los desafíos de escalabilidad, interoperabilidad y personalización de las redes blockchain. Al aprovechar estas soluciones, los desarrolladores pueden crear aplicaciones descentralizadas más eficientes, fáciles de usar e interoperables, lo que en última instancia impulsa la adopción y el crecimiento del ecosistema de activos digitales.
